Camera “Traps” are Way Cool because . . .

Large-bodied terrestrial mammals are often called “charismatic megafauna” as they capture our attention and inspire our imagination. Many large mammals are also the focus of modern conservation challenges, undergoing population declines due to competition with people over space and security. These animals are also often rare and elusive, making it difficult to assess and manage their populations.

Dr. Cole Burton will show you how an exciting research tool, the camera “trap”, is generating Way Cool pictures while helping to improve knowledge of large mammal populations and inform their conservation. Dr. Burton is an Assistant Professor in UBC’s department of Forest Resources Management and Canada Research Chair in Terrestrial Mammal Conservation. He leads the Wildlife Coexistence Lab and has been using camera traps to study many large mammals around the world, from leopards in Africa to caribou in Alberta.
