The Beaty Education Team had a Fantastic Time at Apple Festival

The Beaty Education team had a fantastic time at UBC Botanical Garden’s Apple Festival this year! In between feasting on apple treats and watching kids play in the giant pile of leaves in the children’s area, they helped visitors explore a selection of specimens from the museum. Visitors got the opportunity to touch a moose antler, see the inner structure of a bighorn sheep horn, and learn how to tell the difference between the a horn and an antler. We also explored the mysterious world of fruits and veggies to find out why a fruit salad made by a botanist may contain strange things like apple cores, rice, and green peppers. During the puppet show, Harriet the Galapagos Tortoise was feeling quite nervous about predators, so she got an Extreme Tortoise Makeover courtesy of a local fashionista, Piper the Porcupine. Piper taught us that animals, including scorpions, goats, and poisonous frogs, have some pretty amazing defenses to protect them from being eaten… but in the end, Harriet already had all the defense she really needs! All in all, the weekend was amazing. The weather held out for us, and we had some wonderful conversations with people. We are already looking forward to next year’s Apple Festival!
