In terms of antiquity and diversity, fishes are the undisputed champions of the vertebrate world; they have persisted and flourished for over 0.5 billion years and there are more species of fishes than all other vertebrates combined! Freshwater fishes comprise more than 40% of all fishes; yet exist across only 0.8% of the Earth’s surface area (marine habitats, by contrast, constitute 70% of the Earth’s surface). Eric Taylor, Professor of Zoology and Director of the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and Fish Collection, will explore the general question of why fishes are so diverse and illustrate some of the truly amazing adaptations of fishes, including some from BC. The talk will conclude with a viewing of David Attenborough’s spectacular film “Fish” from the BBC’s Life series.

Note: Today’s talk and film will run longer than other Way Cool talks; expect total run time to last approximately 90 minutes.

This is part of the Way Cool Biodiversity Series.
