The Earth has so many lovely intricacies, but it can be hard to figure out where to start. The UTown @ UBC Nature Club at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum aims to help everyone understand life on this planet – the big and the small, the simple and the complex, the new and the old. On Sundays starting October 6, UTown @ UBC Nature Club events will give every family a unique opportunity to participate in hands-on experiences, learn more about the area they live in, and meet other families.
The Nature Club Family Day events are casual, fun, and free for all UNA, UTown and Acadia park families. Activities are drop-in from 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM on Sundays and open to campus families with children ages 5 – 12; we welcome all abilities and science backgrounds. There are real museum specimens of birds, mammals, fossils, shells, and more that can be touched and examined; it’s one thing to learn about the effective predatory skills of an owl, it’s another to touch the serrated feathers and feel the lightness of a wing.
When you can get up close and personal to nature, science comes alive, adding a deeper layer of understanding. This year boasts new topics from the previous years, so even if you have attended Nature Club in the past this year’s events will be fresh and fun! Every month we will feature different activities so join us for your chance to get new science every month
And don’t forget to get your Nature Club Passport with prizes! Kids will receive a blank passport at the first Nature Club event they attend. Come back each month and personalize your passport with your favourite fun facts. After your passport is completed you will be entered into a draw to win 1 of 6 birthday parties or 1 of 10 family memberships to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Once you finish a passport you can start a new one. All UNA, UTown, and Acadia park members who pre-register for the Nature Club event will get double entries for each finished passport for more chances to win.
After your hands-on Nature Club activities you can stay and hear from a real scientist at our monthly Way Cool lecture series at 1:00 PM. Explore way cool topics from ecosystems to microbes – open to all visitors and guests change every month.be sure to join us this fall for some ‘way cool’ additions to this list.
