Idyll above the silently raging ocean

Hakai Institute, Quadra Island, BC

While this region looks beautiful and pristine, the tidal mixing area between the Strait of Georgia and the Johnstone Strait pose one of the most challenging ocean conditions for outmigrating juvenile salmon. Salmon must navigate through waters at CO2 levels not predicted before the end of the century with ocean acidification, and which have been shown to disrupt the physiology and behavior of marine fish. My study looks at the effects of high ocean CO2 on the physiology of wild juvenile salmon.
