Bugs and Beer

By Mairin Kerr, Marketing, Communications & Events Coordinator on September 14, 2015

Would you eat insects?

Beaty Bugs 1

That’s a question we asked guests at our Bugs & Beer night last week. The answer?

Before and After_Beaty Bugs 2

A resounding yes! We thoroughly enjoyed the variety of seasoned grasshoppers and mealworms kindly sent from Next Millennium Farms. It could have helped that the insects were paired with Big Rock Brewery’s delicious Grasshopper Wheat Ale.

The Assistant Curator of the Spencer Entomological Collection, Karen Needham’s convincing talk about why insects are a great source of sustainable protein could have helped too. She explained that insects are also full of nutrients like calcium and B vitamins.

And much to our surprise we’re actually already eating them.

So you’ve been convinced! An easy way to start eating insects is to use insect flour in your cooking. You can get it from Choices Markets here in BC or order it online on Next Millennium Farm’s website where you’ll also find recipes.

Thanks for making the night so fun!
