We welcome you back to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is open!

We are reopening the museum to the public and we are taking all protective measures determined by the public health authorities to combat the spread of COVID-19 in British Columbia. Our team is taking all steps to ensure the safest conditions for our visitors, staff, and volunteers.

Ticketing:

Museum visitor numbers are now limited. Advanced, timed tickets are available online. Walk-in visitors will be accepted, but may be asked to wait if the museum is at capacity. All visitors are encouraged to book an admission ticket with a specific entry time. Please allow at least 60 minutes for your visit to the museum.

If you have complimentary passes, special admission privileges, coupons or pre-paid vouchers, please click here for special instructions on how to redeem your privileges and book a timed-entry visit.

Hours:

The museum is open 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, without Nocturnal evenings at this time.

Tours and Events:

The museum will not be offering in-person tours or programs temporarily. We ask visitors to access one of our self-directed online tours through a mobile device at beatymuseum.ubc.ca/visitor.

Beaty@Home Live:

Please join us online every Wednesday at 1:00pm for our weekly Beaty@Home. Check our calendar of online events here: beatymuseum.ubc.ca/whats-on/calendar/

Store:

Our store is open the same days as the museum from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. For public safety, we ask customers to not handle products without first using the hand sanitizer provided, to minimize touching products when possible, and to not place personal bags on surface areas. To visit only the Beaty Museum Gift Shop, you do not need a ticket, though you may be required to wait in line to enter!

Membership:

Thank you to our members for their on-going support.  You are very important to us! Members will receive extensions for full closure on their memberships. If you want to become a member, please click here!

COVID-19 health and safety measures:

  • Effective Wednesday, September 16, non-medical face masks are mandatory at UBC and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, except for children five years of age or younger. For more information and other exceptions, please read UBC COVID-19 Campus Rules.
  • Please assess your health before visiting the museum, if you feel sick, please stay home.
  • All visitors and staff must maintain a two-metre distance when no physical barrier is in place. Household groups may remain together. Adults are asked to accompany children at all times.
  • All persons must wear an appropriate mask when inside buildings on UBC premises. An appropriate mask must have three layers of tightly woven fabric (cotton or linen), or be a commercially produced three layer disposable non-medical mask, and securely fit, without gaping, over the nose and mouth with ties or ear loops. For more information on appropriate masks please see https://srs.ubc.ca/covid-19/health-safety-covid-19/
  • A plexiglass barrier has been installed at our admissions desk.
  • High-touch surfaces will be cleaned regularly. Hand sanitation stations will be installed at several key areas.
  • Touchable specimens will not be available, as these cannot be effectively cleaned without causing damage to the specimens.
  • We will be moving content from paper handouts and touch screens in the museum onto mobile-accessible platforms. Please bring your own device to connect to our wireless network. Please bring headphones to listen to our audio guide and other content.
  • The seating area behind the admissions desk (the Niche Café) will be closed.
  • We are limiting capacity and installing directional floor arrows to facilitate social distancing.
  • Our entry ramp will accommodate one group at a time; please allow people to exit the ramp before proceeding. Our personnel will provide instructions to visitors in this process.
  • Some exhibit drawers will be closed to reduce the number of high-touch surfaces in the museum.
  • Research personnel will be accessing the collection during open hours; we ask visitors to please give them space to do their work.
  • Some seating in our auditorium will be cordoned off to allow for social distancing.
  • Our elevator will accommodate one group at a time and is available upon request with staff assistance.
