We are taking our Spring Break activities online this year, with weekly, themed, social media challenges and special Spring Break editions of Beaty@Home, our weekly online museum tours. More details will be added soon, we will see you there!
We encourage you to try out new activities, watch videos, make crafts each week that reflect the themes, look below for some of our ideas, or check out our resource page and explore even more!
March 13-20, 2021: Plants

- Explore the seasonality of plants and their relatives and share your findings with us for a chance to win a museum prize!
- Suggested activities:
- Use our Plant guide to help identify local plants.
- Learn how to prepare, press, and preserve plant specimens with these instructions and video.
- Explore your neighborhood on a rainbow walk. Can you spy plants in all the colours of the rainbow?
- Head over to the UBC Physics and Astronomy department to try out a wind-dispersed seeds activity.
- Crafts:
- Learn about invasive plants while you colour.
- Colour and label the parts of a flower.
- Use the plants you pressed earlier to make cards and art to share with family and friends.
- Watch our Backyard Biodiversity playlist on YouTube to learn about common plants in the Vancouver area.
March 21-28, 2021: Animals

- Explore the interconnectedness of animals and their ecosystems. Share your findings with us for a chance to win a prize!
- Suggested activities:
- Use our Insect, Bird, and Mammals guides to learn about local animals.
- Head out on an alphabet walk, and see how many animals you can find!
- Download and play Phylo to learn about interactions between living and non-living things.
- Crafts:
- Try out this origami butterfly!
- Colour a herring, chickadee, or krill.
- Learn to draw a whale.
- Watch:
- Check out our Researchers Revealed video series to learn about a variety of methods scientists use to study animals in the water, in the sky, on land, and in the museum.
- Meet different types of pollinators in this Beaty@Home video, and learn about an amazing type of interaction!
