Join the Beaty Biodiversity Museum for an online professional development day. Learn how we can support your lessons with curriculum links in our exhibits, activities, and programs.

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is a great place for in person and virtual field trips.  Whether you teach pre-school, high-school, or post-secondary, your lessons can be supported by our exhibits, activities, and programs. Learn about the opportunities available to your school at the museum, and the offerings we have for this year. We are running online tours of the museum designed just for teachers, designed to complement our online resources.

K-12 teachers and all other educators, including home-learning facilitators, librarians, early learning specialists, and post-secondary faculty, are welcome to attend this online professional development day.

    • Online Teacher Tour: Join us for a tour of our virtual exhibitions and resources, including the History Alive! award-winning Perspectives on Biodiversity – Sturgeon Knowledge Web
    • On this 60-minute virtual tour and discussion, appropriate for teachers of all subjects, grades and ages, you will explore strategies to utilize First Peoples and Biodiversity-themed museum resources as part of your teaching plan. There will be time for Q&A and we encourage you to ask lots of questions.
    • Space is limited, register for free using the links below. Tours at 10:15 and 12:45 are the same, please sign up for the time that works best for you.

       

  • 11:30 am- 12:30pm | ONLINE
    • Online Tour of the Pacific Museum of Earth: Join us for a virtual tour of the Pacific Museum of Earth, just across the street from the Beaty Museum, with their outreach coordinator, Daniel Gowryluk. He’ll show you the main sights of the gallery, and tell you some of the stories behind his favourite specimens.
    • This 60-minute virtual tour and discussion is appropriate for teachers of all subjects, grades and ages. There will be time for Q&A and we encourage you to ask lots of questions.

  • 30-60 Minutes | TAKE A SCREEN BREAK
    • Take some time between online sessions to eat something, stretch, and get outside. Take a photo of biodiversity in your neighborhood and tag us @BeatyMuseum

 

  • 2:00pm-3:30pm | ONLINE
    • Drop in during “office hours” and chat anytime between 2:00-3:30pm!
    • Do you have questions about the museum, programming, curriculum links, or our resources? Drop in on zoom to chat with museum staff, with text, audio and/or video.

 


Frequently Asked Questions

 

How do I take part in the online tours on Oct 23, 2020?

  • Please register in advance using the above zoom links.
  • Online tours require a strong internet connection and access to a video/sound system. This can be achieved through a laptop. If you do not have access to the internet, you can call into the tour using a local phone number. When you click the zoom link, you will be taken to a waiting room, the host will then let you into the session.
  • The online tour will be about 60 minutes long. The tour will be run using Zoom, as this is a widely available and easy to use platform. We take steps to ensure security while online and expect the same of the groups we are working with. We ask that you do not share your unique meeting link beyond the immediate audience and avoid posting meeting links on social media. We expect participants to join and leave at designated times.
  • There is an element of risk using any online interface, and while we take steps to ensure security of the facilitators and audience, we cannot accept responsibility should the session be compromised. We do not record our online tours out of respect for the safety and privacy of our facilitators and participants.

 

Can I visit the museum in person on Oct 23, 2020?

  • Yes, the museum is open! Click here to see how we are working to keep the museum clean, and the steps you can take to have a safe and comfortable visit.
  • As the continued safety and well-being of our visitors, staff and volunteers is our highest priority we are not offering in person tours or programs at this time. You are welcome to join us for a self-led visit and explore at your own pace. Please note, we are limiting the number of visitors, please book your ticket in advance as drop in spaces are subject to availability and we expect them to sell out. Can I bring my kids if I visit in person on Oct 23, 2020?

  • Yes, you can bring your children and a partner to the museum for free. Please note, we are limiting the number of visitors, please book your ticket in advance as drop in spaces are subject to availability and we expect them to sell out.   • We are not offering in person tours or programs at this time. You are welcome to join us for a self-led visit and explore at your own pace. Click here to find suggestions for self-led in museum activities

 

How much does it cost?

  • Online sessions and on site visits are FREE. Space is limited please register in advance!
  • Onsite visits are free for all educators – K-12 teachers, home-learning facilitators, librarians, early-learning specialists, and post-secondary faculty are welcome to attend this professional development day. Please bring an ID card (Teacher Federation, Association ID, or employer). If you do not have a card, bring in a paystub or letter on letterhead from your employer or association for free entry. Pre-service teachers can show their Student Cards for free entry.

 

Is there a set start time?

  • Our online sessions have set start times.
  • Self-guided online exploration is open all day, for entry into our prize draw, you will need to complete the online activity guide before 11:59pm, Sunday October 25, 2020.
  • If you wish to visit the museum, please book a timed ticket. See the program schedule above for start times of tours, activities, and films.

 

Do I have to register?

  • Yes. Space is limited.
  • Please register in advance for our online sessions. If you register and can no longer attend, please cancel your registration so we can pass it to another person.
  • If you are visiting in person, please register for timed tickets. Drop-ins will only be accommodated as space permits. In previous years, in-person tickets have sold out quickly, due to space limitations it is likely drop-in space will be extremely limited.  Book your ticket online using promo code “PDD2020”
