Thank You to our Founding Donors

The Beaty Biodiversity Museum was made possible through a partnership of UBC researchers, government, and private donors,  all committed to a vision of enhancing understanding of biodiversity, how it evolves, how it is maintained, and how we can conserve it. We are grateful to our founding donors who made essential contributions to the creation of this world-class facility for biodiversity research and community learning.

Ross and Trisha Beaty

It’s no coincidence that Ross and Trisha Beaty’s support for UBC consistently profiles the value and wonders of the natural world. Calling minerals “nature’s art,” Ross chose geology as a profession because of his love for the outdoors, a passion he shares with wife Trisha, whom he met through UBC’s Varsity Outdoor Club. Helping to advance research on biodiversity and to make UBC’s vast collection of specimens more accessible to the wider community is a logical extension of the Beatys’ dedication to the earth and its future. Through their inspiring philanthropy, the Beatys have also championed the Beaty Biodiversity Centre, the Pacific Museum of the Earth, and the Earth Sciences Building at UBC.

The Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation

Regarding children as the most precious gift given to humankind, Djavad Mowafaghian established a foundation so that he might help future generations around the world. With a mandate to better the lives of children through health and education, The Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation has made a significant difference in the lives of many. In recognition of the foundation’s leadership support of the museum, the two-storey glass gallery that showcases the Beaty’s flagship exhibit, the skeleton of a blue whale, is named the Djavad Mowafaghian Atrium.

Dr. Allan Yap

Dr. Allan Yap, a well-known and respected supporter of higher education and children’s health in both Vancouver and Hong Kong, also provided significant funding in support of the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. In recognition of his generous gift, the theatre and lab have been named the Allan Yap Theatre and the Allan Yap Discovery Lab. Educational programming and scientific discovery are key components of both these spaces in the museum.
